# Are xiangqi endgames easier than chess endgames?

These answers restate the rules implemented by our open-source engine, which follows the WXF laws and is regression-tested against the official 110-diagram repetition casebook. ## What replaces the difficulty

The defensive structure. Whether the defender has two advisors or one decides whole classes of endgame, and that judgement is genuinely subtle — a lone chariot draws against a full defence and wins against a broken one, with no material difference between the two positions at all.

## What still has to be learned

The basic mates, and the material table: what forces mate and what does not. A lone cannon cannot mate, which is the kind of fact that decides a game and cannot be derived at the board. That is an afternoon's work and it pays for itself immediately.
