# Can a cannon help defend against a horse fork?

> **Sometimes.** A cannon cannot stop a fork from landing the way a piece controlling the fork square could, but once the fork exists it can threaten the **horse itself** across a screen, forcing it to choose between completing the fork and saving itself. If the horse has nowhere safe to retreat to afterward, a well-placed cannon can make the whole fork unprofitable.

## Why this only sometimes works

It depends entirely on whether a screen already exists, or can be created in time, on a line to the horse's square. A cannon with no usable line to the forking square contributes nothing to the defence, which is why this is a situational resource rather than a general answer to horse forks.

## The more reliable defence

Preventing the fork square from being reachable in the first place, watching horse legs and controlling the squares a horse wants to jump to, works far more often than trying to punish a fork after it has already landed. Treat a cannon's counter-threat as a bonus resource, not the primary plan.
