# Can a chariot get trapped in xiangqi?

It is far less common than a trapped horse, because a chariot needs far less to become active again.

## Why it's rare compared to a trapped horse

A horse can be shut down by a single piece on its leg point. A chariot needs an entire rank and an entire file blocked at once, which normally only happens deep in a cramped opening or a very cluttered middlegame position, and it tends to resolve itself quickly as pieces trade off.

## The practical danger

The real cost of a boxed-in chariot is rarely permanent immobility, it is lost time. A chariot that needs several moves of clearing before it can act is a chariot that isn't helping your attack, which is why opening theory puts such weight on getting a file open for each chariot early.
