# Can a move that delivers checkmate still be illegal if it exposes your own general?

If the answer is no, the move is refused outright, even if the same move would have checkmated the opponent. What the move does to the other side is never considered when deciding whether you are allowed to play it.

## Why the order matters

A player can sometimes see a spectacular finish, a piece flying across the board to deliver mate, and miss that the same move walks their own general into an attack that was already there. The rules do not weigh one outcome against the other. Self-safety is checked before anything else, so the "checkmate" never gets played at all.

## A common way this happens

It usually comes from a piece that was quietly defending the general against a chariot or a cannon on another line. Moving it to deliver a flashy attack removes that defence, and the move is illegal for that reason alone, regardless of how good it looks on the attacking side of the board.
