This matters most in endgames, where a general defending a soldier or an advisor is a real defensive resource. ## Where it shows up A crossed soldier that invades the palace is only dangerous if it is supported; if the general can simply eat it, it achieves nothing. Conversely a defending general holding its own advisor in place can be the reason an attack stalls one move short. ## The limit The general defends only inside the palace and only orthogonally adjacent points โ€” at most four, usually fewer.
