# Can a piece be immune from capture in xiangqi?

## Why the general seems protected but is not

The general is never physically captured in a properly played game only because checkmate ends things first: the rules force a response to check on the very next move, so a position where the general could actually be taken never survives to the following turn. The piece itself has no special immunity.

A piece is safe when it is defended by something that can recapture, or when nothing enemy can reach its point at all.
