There is no diagonal capture of any kind, which is the single clearest difference from a chess pawn, whose move and capture directions are not the same. ## Why chess players expect otherwise A chess pawn moves straight and captures diagonally, so an approaching enemy pawn is usually not a threat until it lines up on an adjacent file. A xiangqi soldier has no such split: whatever point it can move to is also the only point it can capture on, so an advancing soldier threatens exactly what it is pointing at, and nothing to either side, until it has actually crossed the river. ## What this means at the board Two soldiers can only actually fight if one is directly in front of the other, or, once both have crossed, directly beside each other on the same rank. A soldier one file over is never a threat to another soldier, uncrossed or not, because neither can reach the other's file to capture it. ## Related questions Does a crossed soldier gain a diagonal capture too?
