# Can a soldier ever be more valuable than a horse in xiangqi?

## Why position beats the table here

A soldier's low nominal value assumes it is an ordinary attacker among many. Once it is inside the enemy palace and irreplaceable to the mating pattern, the way soldier-plus-chariot mates routinely rely on the soldier alone covering the one point a chariot cannot, its actual contribution has nothing to do with its listed number.

## The horse side of the comparison
