# Can advisors leave the palace in xiangqi?

## The five points

From a corner, an advisor can only go to the centre. From the centre, it can go to any of the four corners. It can never reach the edge midpoints of the palace, which is why an advisor on the centre point is doing a different job from one in a corner.

## Why they decide endgames

An advisor fills a palace point, which removes a mating square and gives the general something to shelter behind. Most cannon mates need a particular palace point to be empty.

The rule of thumb that follows: a defender with both advisors holds many endgames that a defender with one loses outright. That is why strong players will give up a soldier to remove one.
