# Can an elephant ever help in an attack in xiangqi?

Its only attacking contribution is **indirect**: moving it can remove a screen an enemy cannon was relying on, or clear a point another of your pieces needs to pass through or land on.

## The one real exception

If an enemy cannon is using your elephant as its screen, moving the elephant switches that cannon off, which is a genuine tempo gain even though the elephant itself never attacked anything. ## Why moving one is usually still a defensive decision

Every elephant move changes what it defends, and since it can never regain offensive ground, the question before moving one is almost always "what am I giving up" rather than "what am I gaining." Treat any elephant move as a defensive trade-off, not a developing move.
