# At what age can children learn xiangqi?

## What to teach first

Start with the chariot alone on an empty board, then add the horse, then the cannon. Three pieces is enough for a real game with a real goal, and it avoids the half-hour lecture that loses a six-year-old.

Teach the cannon last of the three: its capture rule is the one that needs a demonstration rather than an explanation.

## Why it suits children

Games are short, attacks are concrete, and the general cannot hide — so a child can see the target and count the attackers. The elephant and advisor being purely defensive also gives a very clear early lesson about which pieces do which job.
