# Can a horse get trapped in xiangqi?

## Where horses get stuck

- **On the edge file.** Half its moves are off the board already; two blocked legs can leave it with nothing.
- **Behind its own soldiers.** Your own pieces block just as well as the enemy's.
- **Deep in enemy territory with no retreat.** A horse takes three or four moves to come home.

## Trapping one on purpose

It is a genuine plan, not an accident. If an enemy horse has committed to your half, count its legs before you count anything else — if two moves are blocked and you can attack the remaining escape, you win a piece without a combination.
