# Can two of your own pieces be on the same file in xiangqi?

These answers restate the rules implemented by our open-source engine, which follows the WXF laws and is regression-tested against the official 110-diagram repetition casebook. ## Why you would do it on purpose

Doubled chariots on an open file reinforce each other, and two cannons on one file let the front one act as the rear one's screen, which is the same idea behind [馬後炮](https://xiangqimaster.com/blog/what-is-ma-hou-pao) using a horse as the screen instead. Neither formation needs anything unusual, just two pieces reaching the same line.

## How notation handles it

When two identical pieces share a file, ordinary notation, which names a piece by its file, becomes ambiguous. Chinese uses 前 and 後 (front and rear) in place of the file number, and WXF romanisation uses `+` and `-` the same way. See [reading notation](https://xiangqimaster.com/rules/notation).
