# Can you agree a draw in xiangqi?

## When a draw offer makes sense

In a genuinely level simplified position, or where the material on the board cannot force mate. The common misjudgement is offering in positions that look drawish by chess intuition but are not: because stalemate loses and perpetual check loses, xiangqi endgames are more often winnable than they appear.

## Before you offer, count the defence

The benchmark is advisors and elephants. A lone chariot against a full defence is a draw; against a defence missing one advisor it usually wins. Counting that before offering — or accepting — is worth more than any general impression of the position.
