## How it is normally arranged

The stronger player removes an agreed piece, most often a horse, from their own starting array before the first move. Which piece and which side gets the extra move (handicap play often also gives the weaker side an extra move or two) is agreed beforehand between the players, not fixed by a single universal standard.

## Why it works well in xiangqi

Because the board is fixed and pieces have well-understood relative values, a missing horse or chariot is a clear, quantifiable disadvantage that both players can reason about.
