# How do you play an endgame with chariot and elephant against chariot and advisor, where each side kept a different defender?

The practical plan is aiming your chariot at whichever defender's uncovered zone is easier to reach.

## Why the two defenders are not interchangeable here

A lone elephant leaves the palace itself only lightly covered by comparison, since its own points sit outside it. A lone advisor leaves the approaches near the river and the palace's outer points uncovered instead, since it never leaves the palace at all. Each is a genuinely different kind of weakness, not simply a smaller version of the other.

## Choosing where to attack

Compare which of the two defenders' gaps your own chariot can reach faster and more safely, factoring in your own soldier if either side still has one. There is rarely an automatic answer; it depends on which side of the board each chariot is already active on and how exposed the general is in that specific position.
