# Did xiangqi originate in China or Vietnam?

These answers restate the rules implemented by our open-source engine, which follows the WXF laws for movement, checkmate and both repetition rulings: a side that forces a repetition by perpetual check or perpetual chase loses rather than drawing. ## Why people ask

Xiangqi is hugely popular in Vietnam, with a strong competitive scene and a lively street and park culture, and the Vietnamese piece names sound nothing like the Mandarin ones. Someone meeting the game first in Vietnam, or through Vietnamese players, can reasonably wonder whether it began there. But the names are Sino-Vietnamese readings of the same Chinese characters: tướng for 將, xe for 車, pháo for 砲. ## Where and when, as far as sources allow

Most accounts agree that the modern form, with the river, palaces and cannons, had taken shape in China by the Song dynasty (960–1279). Before that the picture is unclear. Games called 象棋 are mentioned earlier, but what they looked like is uncertain, and whether xiangqi grew mainly from those, or was shaped by the Indian game chaturanga, is debated. ## One game, many countries

Today xiangqi is played across East and Southeast Asia and by communities worldwide, under the same basic rules. Nationality of the game matters less to players than the fact that a player from Hanoi and a player from Guangzhou can sit down at the same board without explaining a single rule.
