# Do you need to read Chinese to play xiangqi?

These answers restate the rules implemented by our open-source engine, which follows the WXF laws and is regression-tested against the official 110-diagram repetition casebook. ## The minimum you need

Seven characters per side, and in practice fewer, because starting position tells you what almost everything is. Within a few games you will read them the way you read a road sign: by silhouette, not by decoding.

The one pair worth deliberate attention is 車 (chariot) and 馬 (horse), because they sit next to each other and are the two pieces you most need to count correctly.

## When it starts to matter

Reading notation. 炮二平五 is a move written in characters, and Chinese-language books and game records are the bulk of the literature. Even then it is a small vocabulary: seven pieces, four directions and ten numbers.

The WXF romanisation (C2=5) exists for exactly this reason and covers most of what you need.
