# Does xiangqi have anything comparable to chess endgame tablebases?

These answers restate the rules implemented by our open-source engine, which follows the WXF laws and is regression-tested against the official 110-diagram repetition casebook. Where an answer refers to a specific position, that position lives on the linked reference page, where the build verifies it against the engine before publishing.

> **Yes, but on a much smaller scale.** The basic checkmates and simple material combinations, chariot versus bare general, cannon-and-advisor versus bare general, and similar cases, are fully solved and proven, the xiangqi equivalent of a small chess tablebase. Nothing approaching chess's exhaustive tablebases for larger piece combinations exists, because xiangqi's larger board and piece set make the equivalent computation dramatically harder.

## Why the small cases are solvable but the large ones are not

A bare-general endgame with only two or three pieces on the board has a manageable number of positions to exhaust completely, the same reason chess solved similar small endgames decades before attempting anything larger. Xiangqi's larger board and additional piece types make the position count explode far faster once more material is involved.

## What this means practically for a player

The basic mates are worth learning as fully solved, provably correct technique rather than rules of thumb, see [basic checkmates](https://xiangqimaster.com/endgames/basic-checkmates). Beyond that, more complex endgames are studied through general principles and strong engine analysis rather than an exhaustive, guaranteed-optimal database.

## Related questions

Is this the same as saying xiangqi has been solved?

No, see [has xiangqi been solved like checkers has](https://xiangqimaster.com/blog/has-xiangqi-been-solved-like-checkers-has). Solved endgame categories are a small subset of the full game.

Do engines rely on these solved endgames the way chess engines use tablebases?

To a lesser extent, since the solved set is much smaller, but yes, where they exist they are used the same way.
