# Does xiangqi notation show when a piece crosses the river?

## Why the notation stays silent on it

Xiangqi notation records piece, file, direction and destination, and nothing else, which is also why it marks no captures and no checks. The river crossing is inferable from the file and rank a reader already knows the soldier occupies, so adding a symbol for it would be redundant information layered on a system that deliberately carries the minimum.

## How you actually notice it happened

By following the position, the same way you notice a capture or a check: you track where the pieces are as you replay the moves. Once a soldier's rank number shows it has passed the river line, you know it can now move sideways, and the very next move in the record might do exactly that.
