# When did formal grandmaster titles appear in xiangqi?

## Why a formal title system needed federations to exist first

## How this compares with the older honorific system

Guoshou was earned by reputation and consensus among other strong players, with no certifying body and no fixed criteria. A modern federation grandmaster title is the opposite: awarded against specific, defendable standards by a recognised authority. The two systems reflect the same underlying idea, recognising the strongest players, achieved in very different ways a century or more apart.
