# When did xiangqi adopt Elo-style rating systems?

## What came before a formal number

Reputation, built through results, patronage and word of mouth, filled the role a rating fills today. The old honorific **國手** (guóshǒu), "national hand", is a relic of exactly that older system: an informal recognition of a country's strongest players rather than a calculated figure. ## Why a formal system eventually made sense

As the number of tournaments, federations and internationally active players grew, a reputation-based ranking stopped scaling. An Elo-style system, where a rating predicts results and updates from them automatically, handles a large, spread-out competitive population far better than reputation ever could, which is exactly why chess adopted the same approach for the same reason.
