# How do I hold a draw when I am a piece down?

These answers restate the rules implemented by our open-source engine, which follows the WXF laws and is regression-tested against the official 110-diagram repetition casebook. Where an answer refers to a specific position, that position lives on the linked reference page, where the build verifies it against the engine before publishing.

> **Protect your defensive structure first, and trade off whatever attacking material you can afford to.** Being a piece down is not automatically lost, since several material imbalances, most notably a lone chariot against two advisors and two elephants, are known draws. The job is steering toward one of those, not fighting to win back the piece.

## Guard the advisors and elephants above everything

These are what make a known draw possible; losing one changes the whole picture. Even conceding a soldier to keep an advisor is usually the right trade when you are already behind on material.

## Simplify where you can

Fewer attacking pieces on the board means fewer ways to construct a mating net, so trading the opponent's remaining active pieces, even at some further material cost, can be the difference between a real defence and a lost cause.

Which material deficits are known draws?

A lone chariot against a full defence is the clearest case. See [chariot versus full defence](https://xiangqimaster.com/blog/can-a-chariot-beat-advisors-and-elephants) for the detail.

Should I try to trade pieces even at a further material cost?

Often yes, if it removes an attacker and pushes the position toward a known drawn structure.
