## Why the horse is such a useful partner for a chariot here

A lone chariot can force a general to a specific rank or file but often cannot finish the mate without support, because a chariot cannot control a diagonally adjacent square the way it can control a full line. A horse fills exactly that gap, covering the corner squares next to the palace edge that complete the mating net.

## The general method

Drive the general toward the edge of its palace with the chariot, keep the horse's legs clear so it can reposition freely, and bring the horse to a square that both checks and removes the general's remaining flight squares at once. Watch your own horse's leg throughout, since an accidental block at the wrong moment can waste several tempi.
