# How do you checkmate with a lone cannon, and when is a cannon alone not enough?

## Why the screen requirement is the whole problem

Without a screen, a cannon cannot check the general at all, since it cannot capture anything without jumping one piece first. Your own general moving up to serve as that screen is the most common solution, but it has to be done carefully so your own general does not end up exposed to the flying general rule in the process.

## When cannon-plus-general actually succeeds

With your general acting as the screen and the enemy general driven to the edge of its palace, a cannon can deliver mate, but it typically needs the defending general to be nearly boxed in already, since a cannon alone offers very little restriction of squares compared to a chariot or horse. In practice, cannon endgames are almost always paired with at least one other piece for exactly this reason.
