# How do you stop an enemy soldier in the endgame?

## Use the fact that it cannot retreat

Every soldier move is permanent, so a soldier that has been steered to the edge is out of the game for good. Forcing it sideways toward the edge rather than capturing it is often the cheaper defence.

## Do not underestimate a crossed soldier

A soldier near your palace is worth far more than its nominal 2, because one soldier covering a single escape point turns another piece's check into mate. Deal with it before it arrives, not after.
