# How long should a single xiangqi study session be before it stops helping?

These answers restate the rules implemented by our open-source engine, which follows the WXF laws and is regression-tested against the official 110-diagram repetition casebook. Where an answer refers to a specific position, that position lives on the linked reference page, where the build verifies it against the engine before publishing.

> For most players, **focused sessions of thirty to sixty minutes** get more done than marathon sessions stretching much longer, because calculation quality drops noticeably once fatigue sets in, and tired study tends to reinforce careless habits rather than good ones. A short, alert session beats a long, tired one almost every time.

## The signal that a session has stopped helping

When you notice yourself making the same kind of calculation mistake repeatedly, missing things you would normally catch, or simply losing the will to check your work properly, that is the point of diminishing returns, not an hour on the clock. Pushing through fatigue mostly trains you to accept sloppier calculation as normal.

## What to do instead of one long block

Splitting study across a couple of shorter sessions in a day, or across several days, generally works better than a single exhausting block, particularly for tactics and calculation work specifically. Reviewing games and reading about strategy can tolerate more sustained attention than active calculation practice can.

## Related questions

Does this apply to playing games too, not just study?

Similarly, though a full game naturally has more variety and less pure calculation strain than a solid block of puzzles does.

Is more total study time still better overall?

Generally yes across weeks and months, but it should be accumulated in sessions that stay effective, not in single sittings that run past the point of usefulness.
