# How many points can a chariot attack at once in xiangqi?

## Counting the real number

Take each of the four directions separately and stop at the first occupied point. An open rank and a blocked file give a very different chariot from one hemmed in on both. ## Why the count matters practically

Before committing a chariot to a plan, count what it currently attacks and what it will attack after the move you are considering. A chariot swung to a fuller line for a single extra target is often worse than one left controlling four open points along an empty file.
