# Is cross-training with chess tactics puzzles useful for xiangqi tactical vision, or does it create bad habits?

These answers restate the rules implemented by our open-source engine, which follows the WXF laws and is regression-tested against the official 110-diagram repetition casebook. Where an answer refers to a specific position, that position lives on the linked reference page, where the build verifies it against the engine before publishing.

> **Useful for some things, and not others, in a fairly clean split.** Pins, forks and discovered attacks transfer directly between the two games, so chess puzzles genuinely sharpen that general pattern-spotting habit. Cannon-based tactics, the largest single category unique to xiangqi, have no chess equivalent at all, so no amount of chess puzzle practice builds that specific skill.

## What actually transfers

The habit of checking every capture, check and threat before choosing a move, and recognising pins, forks and discovered attacks once you know to look for them, work identically in both games, echoing the same overlap described in [whether a chess player should learn xiangqi](https://xiangqimaster.com/blog/is-it-worth-learning-xiangqi-if-i-play-chess). Time spent on chess puzzles is not wasted for a xiangqi player in this respect.

## What does not transfer at all

Anything involving the cannon's screen, switching threats on and off by adding or removing a piece, simply has no analogue in chess, so it has to be learned from xiangqi puzzles specifically. Treat chess puzzles as a supplement to general tactical vision, never as a substitute for xiangqi-specific tactics practice.

## Related questions

Could this create bad habits specifically?

Not really, since nothing in chess tactics contradicts a xiangqi rule; the risk is simply relying on it too much and under-practising cannon tactics specifically.

Is the reverse true too, does xiangqi practice help chess tactics?

To a similar degree for the shared patterns; the cannon-specific skills simply have no use in chess at all.
