# Is it a draw if both sides have only their general left?

## Nearly-bare positions are more interesting

One general plus a single piece is where the real questions are. A lone chariot wins. A lone horse or lone cannon does not. A cannon *with an advisor* does, because the advisor supplies the screen.

Those distinctions decide whether a simplification is winning or throwing a win away.

## The trap to avoid

Trading down to a lone cannon against a bare general. It looks like winning material and is in fact agreeing a draw, because a cannon with nothing to jump cannot even give check.
