# Is it worth using an engine while studying xiangqi?

These answers restate the rules implemented by our open-source engine, which follows the WXF laws and is regression-tested against the official 110-diagram repetition casebook. Where an answer refers to a specific position, that position lives on the linked reference page, where the build verifies it against the engine before publishing.

It is a poor way to reach a conclusion in the first place, because the gap between your own answer and the engine's is where the actual lesson lives, and there is no gap if you never answered first.

## Form your view first, every time

Look at the critical position, decide what you would play and why, and only then check. If the engine agrees, that confirms a piece of understanding that is genuinely yours now. ## What engines are less useful for

Raw evaluation numbers rarely explain themselves, especially in the kind of structural endgame judgements, whether a defence is intact, whether material can force mate, that matter most in xiangqi. Use the engine to check lines, and use the material table and your own judgement for structure.
