# Is the xiangqi elephant like a chess bishop?

## The practical difference

A bishop is a long-range attacker worth about three pawns and capable of dominating a diagonal across the whole board. An elephant covers seven points on its own half, forever. Treating one like the other is a reliable way to lose material trying to "develop" it.
