# Is the cannon stronger than a chess bishop?

A **cannon** moves freely along open lines but can only **capture by jumping exactly one screen**. Xiangqi's usual value tables put the cannon above the horse; chess's put the bishop roughly level with the knight.

## Why the cannon is usually rated higher relative to its army

With no queen on the board, the chariot dominates and the cannon is the next most dangerous piece, especially with pieces still cluttering the board early on, when screens are everywhere. A bishop's value in chess is more stable across the game; a cannon's swings with how crowded the position is, strong in the middlegame and often weaker once material thins out and screens disappear.

## What actually transfers

Almost nothing tactically. A bishop pin works because the piece attacks in a straight line with nothing needed in between; a cannon pin (see [the pin](https://xiangqimaster.com/tactics/the-pin)) depends on there being exactly one piece between the cannon and its target, which is a completely different mechanism a chess player has to learn from scratch.
