# Is there a chess equivalent to the xiangqi advisor?

## Why this makes the advisor tricky for chess players

Chess players arriving at xiangqi often try to map every piece onto something familiar; horse to knight, chariot to rook, cannon to nothing at all. The advisor resists this mapping more than most, since its role, pure static palace defence with almost no offensive potential, has no real parallel among chess's more mobile pieces.

## What the advisor is actually good at instead

Occupying exactly the right defensive point and denying it to an attacker, which is a role chess pieces rarely play in such a pure, restricted form. Its weakness in mobility is inseparable from its strength in defence; the two come from the same five-point limitation.
