# Is xiangqi hard to learn?

## What beginners find hardest

- **The cannon's screen.** A cannon aimed at a piece with nothing between them is not attacking it. Counting one piece, every time, is a habit that takes weeks.
- **The horse's leg.** Blocked at the point it steps through, not the point it lands on. Chess players miss this constantly.
- **The flying general.** Your own general attacks down its file, which is free help you will forget you have.

## What is easier than chess

There is no promotion to track, no castling rights, no en passant, and the general cannot run: it is stuck on nine points. Endgames are shorter and more decisive because stalemate loses. Many players find xiangqi endgames far easier to learn than chess ones.
