# Is xiangqi more similar to janggi or to chess?

## Why the family tree points one way and the character points another

Janggi descends directly from xiangqi, keeping the board and most of the piece set, so the two are close relatives by structure. But janggi's ability to pass a turn and its differently-restricted general produce a noticeably slower, more manoeuvring game, while xiangqi's forced-move rule and confined general push toward the sharper, more forcing style chess players tend to recognise.

## What actually transfers between each pair

Xiangqi to janggi: the board reading, the palace concept, and most piece shapes carry over almost immediately. Xiangqi to chess: calculation habits, tactical vocabulary, and attacking technique carry over, but the specific pieces do not. Neither transfer is complete in both directions.
