# Is xiangqi more tactical than chess?

## Why the tactics are denser

Lines switch on and off. A cannon's attack appears when any piece arrives on its line and vanishes when the screen leaves, so the tactical landscape changes with moves that look positional. In chess, a quiet move is usually quiet.

## Where the positional play is

It exists, in the defensive structure. Whether to keep both advisors, which elephant to move, when to trade a cannon for a horse — these are long-term judgements that decide endgames twenty moves later. It is positional play, just not about pawns.
