# Is xiangqi related to western chess?

## What the shared ancestry looks like

A king to be trapped, a chariot-like piece moving in straight lines, a horse-like piece with a bent move, an elephant, and foot soldiers. That template recurs across xiangqi, shatranj, shogi, janggi and western chess, which is strong evidence of a common source.

## What is purely Chinese

The cannon, the river, the palace, play on intersections, and the flying general rule. None of these appears in the Indian games, and the cannon in particular cannot predate gunpowder artillery — which is a useful independent check on the dating.
