# Is xiangqi the same as Chinese checkers?

## Where the confusion comes from

The name "Chinese checkers" is genuinely misleading. It was created in Germany in the late 19th century as a variation on an older American game, and the "Chinese" in the name was a marketing choice rather than a description of its origin. Xiangqi, by contrast, really is Chinese and really is centuries old.

## What the two games have in common

Essentially nothing beyond both being played on a board with pieces. Chinese checkers has one type of piece and no captures at all, just jumps toward a fixed goal; xiangqi has seven distinct piece types, a river and palace, and ends by trapping a specific piece rather than by finishing a race.
