# Is xiangqi's elephant closer to janggi's elephant or to a chess bishop?

A bishop is a genuine long-range attacking piece that ranges the whole board on one colour; xiangqi's elephant is a short-range, purely defensive piece confined to seven points for the entire game. The shared word "diagonal" hides just how differently the two actually behave at the board.
