# What is the difference between a straight chariot (直車) and a horizontal chariot (橫車)?

These answers restate the rules implemented by our open-source engine, which follows the WXF laws for movement, checkmate and both repetition rulings: a side that forces a repetition by perpetual check or perpetual chase loses rather than drawing. The chase half has not been validated against the official casebook. A **horizontal chariot (橫車)** first steps up one point (for example 車一進一) and then swings sideways along that rank toward the centre or the other wing.

## The straight chariot

In the Central Cannon the right horse and right cannon both leave the second file early, so the corner chariot can slide across and take it. From there it goes straight up the open file, often to the river bank or across it. This is quick and direct: the chariot reaches an open line in one move and immediately bears down on whatever stands at the far end.

The drawback is that the plan is easy to see. Black frequently answers by putting a chariot on the same file, and the two chariots then contest it.

## The horizontal chariot

A lifted chariot uses its second rank as a road. From there it can move to the file in front of an advisor, near the centre, or cross to the other wing, wherever the game needs it. It supports the centre, helps defend, and keeps its options open.

The cost is time: lifting the chariot is one move, and swinging it across is a second. It also sits on a rank that other pieces may want to cross, so it has to move before it gets in the way.

## Choosing between them

Many systems use one of each: a straight chariot on the wing where the file is already open, and a horizontal chariot on the other side where no file is ready yet.
