# What are chariot endgames like in xiangqi?

These answers restate the rules implemented by our open-source engine, which follows the WXF laws and is regression-tested against the official 110-diagram repetition casebook. Where an answer refers to a specific position, that position lives on the linked reference page, where the build verifies it against the engine before publishing.

> They are the **most common endgame in xiangqi**, and the result usually turns on the **defensive structure rather than the chariot**. A lone chariot draws against two advisors and two elephants, and wins against a defence missing one advisor. The chariot play itself is rarely the hard part.

## Two chariots is a different game

Two chariots mate alone — 雙車錯 — with no other pieces needed, because each controls a whole line and the palace only has three ranks. If your opponent has two and your general is exposed, trading one is almost always right, even at material cost.

## Technique with one

Bring your own general up to hold a file, take the escape points before checking, and do not chase the general around aimlessly. The sixty-move rule is generous, but only if you are making progress with it.

## Related questions

Chariot against chariot — who wins?

Usually the side with the better defence or an extra soldier. Level material with equal defences is a draw.

Is chariot and soldier winning?

Against a full defence it is much better than a lone chariot, and often winning.
