# What is a fortress in xiangqi?

## Why fortresses are possible despite a material deficit

Because advisors and elephants are confined to small, fixed areas and defend specific points extremely efficiently, a complete defensive set can deny an attacker any useful entry even against a full extra chariot in some configurations. The classic example is a lone chariot unable to break a defender with both advisors and elephants intact.

## Recognising when a fortress is real

Not every solid-looking defence is a genuine fortress, some just delay the inevitable. A real fortress holds against every reasonable try, not just the first attempt, which is why strong defenders test their own position by looking for the attacker's best possible plan, not just an obvious one.
