# What is a river-patrolling chariot (巡河車)?

> 巡河 means **"patrolling the river"**. A **巡河車** is a chariot placed on your own side's river-bank rank, for example with 車二進四. From there the chariot watches the whole river line, can swing to either wing, and supports its own soldiers, without the risks of crossing into enemy territory.

## Why the river bank is a good post

The rank just before the river is the last line on your own side. A chariot there can move sideways across the full width of the board in one move, so it can meet threats on either wing or join an attack wherever one opens. It also guards the points in front of your soldiers, which makes it easier to push them across later.

A cannon placed on the same rank is called a 巡河炮, and the idea is similar, though a cannon needs screens to attack from there.

## Patrolling versus crossing

A [crossing chariot (過河車)](https://xiangqimaster.com/blog/what-is-central-cannon-crossing-chariot) goes one step further and plants itself in the enemy half, where it attacks directly but can be chased and harassed by horses, cannons and soldiers. The patrolling chariot is the more patient version: less immediate pressure, more flexibility and safety.

Neither is simply better. Crossing makes sense when the chariot has clear targets and cannot easily be trapped; patrolling makes sense when the position is not yet ready for an assault.

## What to watch for

A piece on the river bank can still be attacked. Enemy horses near the river and cannons with a screen can hit it, so check before you park it that it has a retreat. A chariot's value comes from moving, so avoid a post where it has to keep running.
