# Can the general be smothered in xiangqi?

## The defender's own structure as the trap

Two advisors and two elephants occupy four points near the general. Well placed, they are the defence that draws a lone chariot. Badly placed, they are a cage. The named mate that exploits this most directly is 重炮, which needs the general to be unable to step sideways.

## Immobility is a loss

Because xiangqi has no stalemate draw, deliberately taking away an opponent's last legal move is a winning technique, not a blunder. It comes up in bare endgames and constantly in composed problems.
