# What is a waiting move in xiangqi and when should I play one?

## When it is the right choice

Against an opponent whose system you do not know well, or in a symmetrical position where committing first can hand over the initiative, a waiting move lets you react rather than guess. ## When it is the wrong choice

Once a real threat exists on the board, a waiting move that ignores it is simply a mistake, not a strategy. Waiting only works before there is anything to answer; after that, every move should be doing something concrete.
