# What is the initiative (先手) in xiangqi, and how do you keep it?

These answers restate the rules implemented by our open-source engine, which follows the WXF laws for movement, checkmate and both repetition rulings: a side that forces a repetition by perpetual check or perpetual chase loses rather than drawing. The chase half has not been validated against the official casebook. Where an answer refers to a specific position, that position lives on the linked reference page, where the build verifies it before publishing.

> Having the **initiative**, 先手 in Chinese, means your moves create threats your opponent has to answer, so they spend their turns reacting instead of carrying out their own plans. The side answering is said to play 後手. You keep the initiative by making **threats that also develop or improve your pieces**, and you lose it by grabbing material or making slow moves that give the opponent a free turn.

## Why it matters so much in xiangqi

The general is confined to its palace and cannot run far, so a series of forcing moves often leads straight to a mating attack. Cannons and chariots create threats from a distance, horses create threats that are hard to see, and every one of those threats has to be answered. A player who keeps forcing the pace also keeps the opponent from ever starting their own attack. That is why a small material investment for the initiative is often considered sound.

## How to keep it

- **Threaten with developing moves.** A chariot that comes out and attacks something does two jobs at once.
- **Prefer moves the opponent must answer.** Checks, attacks on undefended pieces, threats to mate.
- **Do not stop to collect small change.** Taking a soldier that costs two moves to bring the capturing piece back may hand over the initiative.
- **Convert before it fades.** The initiative is temporary. Turn it into something lasting, such as material, a crossed soldier or a broken defence, while you still have it.

## When you are the one reacting

Look for a defensive move that also threatens something. Once your opponent has to answer you, even once, the initiative can change hands. Trading off the most active attacking piece is another common way to end the pressure. For the underlying idea of a move's time value, see [what a tempo is](https://xiangqimaster.com/blog/what-is-a-tempo-move-in-xiangqi).

## Related questions

Does 先手 also mean moving first?

Yes, it can simply mean the first mover, but in strategy talk it usually means holding the initiative.

Is a check always a way to keep the initiative?

Only if the position after the check is better for you. A check that drives the general to safety can waste your initiative.
