# What should I do with a loss during a tournament, before the next round starts?

These answers restate the rules implemented by our open-source engine, which follows the WXF laws and is regression-tested against the official 110-diagram repetition casebook. Where an answer refers to a specific position, that position lives on the linked reference page, where the build verifies it against the engine before publishing.

> **Note briefly what went wrong, then set it aside.** A quick mental note, or a line in a notebook, of what happened is enough during a tournament; a full, careful review belongs after the event is over. Dwelling on a loss between rounds mostly just carries frustration into the next game, which is the actual risk worth managing in the moment.

## Why full analysis has to wait

Deep review takes real time and mental energy, exactly what you need available for the round still ahead of you. A tournament is not the moment to extract every lesson from a loss, it is the moment to reset and be ready for whoever you face next, however that game went.

## A workable routine between rounds

A short, factual note of the key moment, then something unrelated to xiangqi entirely, a walk, food, conversation, before the next round. See [recovering mentally after a bad loss](https://xiangqimaster.com/blog/how-do-i-recover-mentally-after-a-bad-loss) for the deeper version of this once the event itself is over and full review is actually useful.

## Related questions

Should I replay the lost game on a board between rounds?

Generally not in full; a brief mental note is enough, and full review is better saved for after the event when you are not about to play again.

Is it normal for one loss to affect how I play the next round?

Very common, which is exactly why deliberately resetting between rounds is worth treating as its own skill.
