# When should you advance your general in the endgame?

These answers restate the rules implemented by our open-source engine, which follows the WXF laws and is regression-tested against the official 110-diagram repetition casebook. > **As soon as nothing can attack it.** Once the opponent's active pieces are gone, your general is completely safe and becomes a genuine attacker — it denies the enemy general the whole file it stands on. Leaving it at home is one of the most common reasons a won endgame is not converted.

## What it is worth

A free attacker that costs no moves to maintain. A lone chariot mates a bare general only because your general holds the escape file; move it away and the same position is a check and nothing more. It is frequently the difference between mating and drifting into a sixty-move draw.

## The limit

It can only move within the palace, one point at a time, so "advancing" means choosing which of nine points it occupies. And it may not step onto a file where the enemy general already faces it on a clear line, because that move is illegal.
