# Which xiangqi pieces match which chess pieces?

These answers restate the rules implemented by our open-source engine, which follows the WXF laws and is regression-tested against the official 110-diagram repetition casebook. Where an answer refers to a specific position, that position lives on the linked reference page, where the build verifies it against the engine before publishing.

> Only one is an exact match: the **chariot is a rook**. The **horse is a knight that can be blocked**. The **soldier is a pawn** with no double step, no diagonal capture and no promotion. The **elephant and advisor** have no real equivalent, the **cannon** has none at all, and there is **no queen**.

## The table

- **Chariot 車 = rook.** Identical movement.
- **Horse 馬 ≈ knight**, but blockable and therefore much weaker in a crowded position.
- **Soldier 兵 ≈ pawn**, but captures as it moves and never promotes.
- **Elephant 象** — two points diagonally, blockable, never crosses the river. Far weaker than a bishop.
- **Advisor 士** — five points, palace only. No equivalent.
- **Cannon 炮** — no equivalent in any western piece.
- **General 將** — a king confined to nine points.

## No queen is the structural difference

Without a queen, the chariot is the dominant piece and is worth roughly two horses. Everything in the value table shifts accordingly, and attacks need two coordinated pieces rather than one overwhelming one.

## Related questions

Why is there no queen?

The game simply never developed one. The advisor occupies the same board position and is purely defensive.

Is the horse worth the same as a knight?

Relatively less early, because it can be blocked, and relatively more late, when it cannot.
